IN THE BEGINNING:
I was born in Elkins, WV. Graduated from Elkins High School, Class of 1977. While attending Fairmont State College in 1978, I began working weekends at WDNE-AM, the only radio station in Elkins at the time. This was back, when we actually played records. (Do you remember those?) There was no such thing as a CD, DVD, iPod or home computer. (We had just made the move from 8-tracks to cassettes) We wrote our commercials on a manual typewriter. (Good thing I took "Typing I" in High School, twice.) We ripped the news off of a teletype machine and read it live. (Man, am I old!) I soon decided I could pay to go to college and study radio or I could get paid to be on the radio. I chose the latter and 32 years later, I'm still here. I host the Afternoon Drive shift on WDNE 98.9 FM, Your Country Home. Join me for the Drive @ Five.
LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE
On March 20, 2004 I went to work on a Saturday morning and didn't go home for 7 weeks. I suffered an Aortic Dissection. (Actor John Ritter died of the same thing 6 months earlier) After a short ambulance ride to Davis Memorial Hospital, I was lifeflighted to Morgantown. By the grace of God and with the help of some talented surgeons, I survived open heart surgery at Ruby Memorial Hospital. I now have a man-made Aortic Heart Valve clicking away in my chest. I received a ton of Get Well cards from listeners and I know a lot of people were praying for me, I thank you for that. If you have chest pains, don't ignore it. If the doctor says your EKG looks good, so it's not a heart attack, go home and rest. But you're not satisfied, ask for a CT scan, especially if there is a history of dissections in your family.
